Whether you want to create a classic Hamptons house or a cool Beach House our Style Guide you will give you tips, tricks and trends that will help you bring the seaside to your home.

It’s easy to achieve a clean, clutter free and relaxed space – let us help you get started with some ideas to achieve the “life by the sea” look.

.  Use balance and symmetry to give a sense of calm.
.  Choose comfortable furniture to sit in, lie in and dine at.
.  Lighting pulls everything together and adds magic to the mix

What is your colour palette?
Allow one colour to be “the voice” in your palette - it sets the tone.  This colour creates unity and pulls together the competing colours in the fabrics, carpets, rugs or art.

Take your inspiration from nature and dress your interior in sandy creams, driftwood browns and neutrals, all shades of the ocean from aqua to china blue and sunrise inspired splashes of colour – voila the beach house you have always wanted!

Don’t be afraid to base your scheme on a neutral.  Touches of black can bring visual interest and drama.  Think natural linens in interesting textures teamed with smart charcoals or navy freshened with crisp white.

Once you have determined your colour palette this will set the mood of the room or house and helps to ensure a unified end result.   Nature will be the main source of inspiration but also look at the things you love and have collected over time they will help you decide on your palette.

If you long to introduce colour,  right now the hottest colour trend is burnt orange with charcoal or purplish grey (think aubergines or soft lilac partnered with darkest black).  Colour is a tool you can use to balance a room and this can be introduced by a floor rug, artwork or an upholstered chair which draws the eye.

Lighting and Flooring

Consider the use of the space and select lights for the task – decorative lamps create ambience and eliminate the need for excessive use of down lights. A combination of table lights and floor lights creates a warm inviting space and can be easily moved as required.

Timber floors give your room a warm and inviting base and look wonderful with rugs in natural textures – try the affordable hemp rugs from the on-line store.

Choosing key pieces to create an approachable and timeless interior

Start with a sense of your place – what is the architecture and landscaping?  There should be an indoor/outdoor design emphasis.   The focus is on creative use of the space, effective mood lighting and contrasts in texture.   Achieve the contrasts in texture with the use of natural building materials, homewares and furniture that are sustainable and authentic with subtle colours and textual effects.

Consider materials such as untreated and recycled wood, rough wool, linen, leather, suede, bamboo, coral and ceramics.  Surfaces can be handcrafted or primitive.

Sofas should be above all comfortable, so puffy and overstuffed is the way to go.  Whether you choose a fully upholstered sofa or a more casual wicker look both will work well in a beach house or Hamptons scheme.  Rattan and wicker furniture are popular in seaside themes because they are flexible, durable and lightweight and ideal for stylish couches, chairs, tables and ottomans. Outdoor furniture should also reflect the natural theme consider driftwood, bamboo, rattan, cane and wicker pieces teamed with cushions and throws.

Window treatments
Light is important in a coastal scheme, and if possible choose window coverings that disappear. The individual requirements of the space and need for light control will dictate your choice of window treatment.  Opt for a colour that matches your walls.  Choose full height curtains in sheer or fully lined drapes, or roman blinds in an interesting textured textile.  Plantation shutters may be needed in some spaces but beware they can shut out light.

Homewares and Accessories
Accessories chosen for their coastal or nautical theme evoke a sense of a magical life by the sea.  Model ships, sailboats, fishing floats, baskets, coral, artwork, driftwood, nautical equipment and hurricane lamps all contribute to a coastal theme.

Use coffee tables, side tables, wall units and consoles to display your accessories. Beautiful bold corals are stunning and give an instant ‘wow’ factor to your room. Small accessories look great in fisherman’s baskets on the floor fill them with rope balls or fishing floats.   Simplicity is the key when deciding on accessories so keep the look clean, breezy and clutter free.
